Does more need to be done to combat online abuse? For such a personal matter, internet sites handle this issue so impersonally! What do you think can and needs to be done to combat online abuse and the way that it is dealt with? Have your say and let us know what you think….
This discussion is in relation to our previous post and discussion regarding online abuse. For those that haven’t read it already, please check it out and let us know what you think.(Can be found @ http://tomthumb.info/tt/index.php/2012/11/09/abuse-is-just-a-click-away/) We focused on what had been happening in the world of tom thumb and asked the question “By using social networking are we allowing ourselves to be open to a world of abuse?”Thank you to those that have commented on here and also through the social network sites.
Online abuse is a very serious matter. It can turn peoples lives into a living nightmare. Our own experiences with online abuse has been a mild case in comparison to what some have faced. Justice has seemed to prevail with the abusers been removed from the discussion, warned about their actions and their offline pursuant seems to have ceased.
We think changes need to be made to how online abuse is reported and how it is dealt with by internet sites. We found that certain social networking sites have a button for reporting abuse but the way in which it is dealt with is very impersonal. For such a personal issue you would expect a “real” person to be able to respond to you complaints and help you with the issue that you are facing but we found no such thing. We received a “send to many” style email which was very impersonal. We do know that in extreme cases information is passed onto the police to investigate but we feel that a service needs to be provided by internet sites for their users. A personal, tailored service so that if the user faces abuse online they know the are going to get support the need and require. Also harsher penalties for abusers need to be implemented as well to act as a deterrent. It is sooo easy nowadays’s to have multiple accounts under different names etc. Changes need to come so that those that are guilty of abusing others online face bans from ISP’s so they can’t log into or create other accounts and continue attacking their victims.
